Change Your Posture to Change Your Outcome

I watched a TED Talk today given by Amy Cuddy, a social psychologist, professor and researcher at the Harvard Business School. She said exactly what I have instinctually known for a long time. "Our bodies change our minds."

Non-verbal cues (i.e. Body Language) is something we are all aware of and we use it each and every day to help us communicate with others and make decisions. But how many of us are aware from minute to minute that our own body language has EVERYTHING to do with how we feel which ultimately determines our outcomes? 

 

True Story

One of my former one on one coaching clients is an absolutely gorgeous woman. She is about 5'7" with long hair and very physically fit. Add to her physical appearance the fact that she is very smart, hard working, is a loving mom, and people like her - a lot. I was having a hard time figuring out why she wasn't achieving the level of success in her real estate business that I clearly saw that she could. It began to occur to me what the issue might be when one day I had a chance to see her walk into a restaraunt for lunch, and then for an hour observe how she sat while having lunch with two other colleagues and myself.

This gorgeous woman walked in cautiously and then sat with her shoulders hunched forward and in what Amy Cuddy would call a "closed posture." The light bulb came on for me. She is not projecting to the world the competence, intelligence, and ability that I saw in her through our phone conversations. And if her physical self was in fact a reflection of her inner self then I knew the answer to my question.

 

The Solution

Over the next few months I worked with her on her posture. "Walk in like you own the room," I would tell her.  I encouraged her to look people in the eye, stand up straight, hold her shoulders back, and walk with purpose.

It is my pleasure to report that not only did her self esteem increase, but so did her sales. She began to attract more business and she also made some major adjustments in relationships with her family of origin that were a long time coming.
