Do You Feel Like a Square Peg Trying to Fit Into a Round Hole?

This weekend I was sitting with my one year-old granddaughter as she played with her toys. We have one in particular that she finds quite frustrating - it’s the one that requires you to match the correct shape with the corresponding hole in the box in order to push it through.

I love the toy myself because I know after she has tried the star block in every hole she eventually finds the star shaped hole and pushes it through. Of course we do this over and over again before she finally realizes that the square blocks ONLY fit into the square holes and the round blocks only fit into the round holes - no matter how hard she tries to make them go through all the others.

This seems to be a highly appropriate metaphor for many REALTORS I know and talk with.

The fact is, there are many different ways to succeed in real estate just as there are multiple shapes in my granddaughter’s toy! They key is knowing your unique shape and finding the corresponding opening in real estate to push through.

Too many times I see agents continue to push their heart shaped block through the star shaped hole!

Let’s face it... some people are cut out for cold-calling and door knocking while others are naturally talented at networking and open houses. Undoubtedly most of us “could” do all the things that are proven to generate business, but the reality is that when we focus on our natural talents, we generate far more business than doing something we dread. It’s about our energy...how we feel and how we show up.

1. What are my natural talents. Where do I shine?

2. How do people see me? What do they appreciate in me?

3. Am I relational and if so, am I connecting with people regularly?

4. Am I task oriented and if so, do I have a system that makes sense to me?

5. Do I prefer intimate conversations or enjoy big groups?

6. Have I explored all the hundreds of ways top agents have been successful in the business or am I buying into only one or two that are being highlighted?

7. Do I currently feel like I am a square peg trying to fit into a round hole?
