People with SoulFire Never Retire

Written on December 14, 2012 at 12:20 pm

When I say I will never retire people just look at me and laugh.

Why would you want to work forever, they ask? Well, I guess because I don't see work as a chore or something I dread. I see work as my "life's work" and not work for the sake of making a paycheck.

I call it SoulFire.

It is doing something that I love, with people I love, for people I love.

Of course not every day is glorious and easy. And I certainly am not wearing rose colored glasses. The fact is, it's about perpective. Each …

Why Senior Living Communities Resist REALTORS

Written on January 24, 2012 at 9:41 am

In visiting with senior community representatives across the country, they express some common frustrations when it comes to dealing with the REALTOR community. You may not be guilty of any of the infractions listed below, but you may have to overcome the negative impressions left by agents who have come before you.

Here are 5 of the 10 most common challenges 55+ communities have with local real estate agents:

1. Asking for business before building rapport (a relationship).

Marketing and sales representatives at retirement communities report that agents often come in and give their “pitch” expecting them to refer their …

There is no doubt that our communities are aging. More and more seniors are staying in their homes longer, and by the time they decide to move - or most often find they don’t have a choice - they need a lot of help.

Life Isn’t Practice

Written on December 14, 2011 at 12:26 pm

My current favorite book is “Aspire” by Kevin Hall. It was a gift from a dear friend and came with a beautiful note inside from his as well as being personally autographed by the author.

The book was an easy read and had a profound impact on me right away. I found myself engrossed in Kevin Hall’s passion for certain words in our vocabulary that we often just take for granted and use without having a true sense of the real meaning behind them. I especially appreciated the lessons on Genshai and Namaste.

In the second chapter of the book …

Green is Sexier than Gray? Really?

Written on November 29, 2011 at 5:01 pm

In preparation for my upcoming 2012 Senior Real Estate Professionals Mastermind Group, I was doing a little research. What I found truly perplexed me. (Ok, first it really ticked me off and then I decided to trade up to a more energetically appealing emotion and “perplexed” seemed to work.)

The current real estate educational trend seems to be all about “Green.” I think it needs to be all about “Gray.”

First, a call to a local Association of REALTORS® yesterday morning to inquire about upcoming SRES® (Senior Real Estate Specialist) courses in the area left my head spinning. The very …

“Normal” is a cycle on a washing machine!

Written on June 16, 2011 at 1:20 pm

"That is just a NORMAL part of aging."

I just want to scream when I hear that phrase!

Someone once said to me that normal is a cycle on a washing machine and nothing more! I love that statement because there really is no such thing as “normal” when it comes to human behavior.

Here is what I found when I looked online at Merriam Webster’s dictionary under the adjective “normal” ...

according with, constituting, or not deviating from a norm, rule, or principle; conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern, occurring naturally; of, relating to, or characterized by …

Do I Need a Designation to Specialize in Senior Real Estate?

Written on June 4, 2011 at 10:00 am

I am frequently asked what I think about real estate designations or other types of certifications.

Before I share my thoughts on the designation issue, let me give you a little background that will create some context.

NOTE: If you would rather forego the history lesson and find out what I believe about designations...jump ahead and skip the next 4 or 5 short paragraphs. It won’t hurt my feelings.

In 1995 I was four years into my second run at being a successful REALTOR. I was only making average money and not seeing much hope for a change so I …
