Why You Want to be a “Surprisologist”

The quote from Maya Angelou above is a beloved one and for good reason: down deep, we all understand that how someone or something makes us feel is typically a memory that can surpass all else.

And that's why the notion of surprises is such a treasured thing. We all love surprises, whether it be a gift, a party, or someone simply doing something that makes us feel different...special...pleasured...the list of adjectives can go on and on.

I've been thinking about the power of surprise for a couple of days now thanks to a TED Talk I came across from a woman who calls herself a “Surprisologist.” Her name is Tania Luna and along with her sister, she founded a Manhattan company called Surprise Industries that focuses on delivering unique, surprise adventures to both individuals and companies, usually as a sort of team-building effort.

I thought “Surprisologist” was a pretty cool phrase and an awesome way to look at life. As individuals, she teaches how important it is for us to look at every thing – even the mundane – in our daily lives as moments of surprise and pleasure. Sure, it's a relatively basic concept, but perhaps one that we all forget upon occasion.

Regardless of how you apply it, the fact is that the element of surprise is a piece of the puzzle that can bring us great joy and happiness on a regular basis.

Just consider for a moment the emotion you experience when a surprise is presented to you. As a child, when your birthday rolled around, you probably couldn't wait to get home from school and really begin to experience your special day – one full of surprises, including what was inside the wrapped presents and what flavor of ice cream and cake would soon fill your tummy.

As an adult, I'd like to challenge you to make surprise a part of your life. Enjoy the small surprises as they jump out at you and endeavor to bring surprise to the lives of others close to you.

I think we all understand that an element of surprise and spontaneity can do wonders for relationships – especially the romantic or spousal ones – as a means of keeping daily drudgery and routine from slipping into our partnerships.

If you're a leader, the same can be said of the power of surprise in keeping the morale of your team high and building a fun-loving, dedicated workplace.

Will you be just another competent REALTOR who provided a service for them, or will you be the one who stands out, builds a memory with them, and grows repeat business and referrals?

I could write another whole blog piece that provides some ideas as to how you may go about surprising your customers, team members, and family, but I think perhaps it would be more helpful for you to take a few moments and consider for yourself what surprises you could have in store for others.

There's another quote I came across in my research that also says it all:

“Routine makes us comfortable. Surprise makes us feel alive.”
